Why Algebra 1

Algebra is where a letter stands in for a number you have yet to find, and every unit here is a way of finding it. The rest of high school math is built on it, and so is most of science. The people who built the subject said why it matters better than we can.

…what is easiest and most useful in arithmetic, such as men constantly require in cases of inheritance, legacies, partition, lawsuits, and trade, and in all their dealings with one another.
Muhammad ibn Musa al-KhwarizmiPersian mathematician, about 780 to 850. The word algebra comes from the title of his book.On what his book of algebra was for, about 820, in Frederic Rosen's 1831 translation
In today's world, economic access and full citizenship depend crucially on math and science literacy.
Robert P. MosesMath teacher and civil rights organizer, 1935 to 2021. He founded the Algebra Project to get every student through algebra.Radical Equations, 2001
Algebra is the intellectual instrument which has been created for rendering clear the quantitative aspects of the world.
Alfred North WhiteheadEnglish mathematician and philosopher, 1861 to 1947An Introduction to Mathematics, 1911

How each skill works

Watch

A short video picked for the skill, from a channel like Khan Academy or Math Antics.

Practice

Get five right on the first try. Problems can be set in things you're into.

Complete

The skill turns green and opens the next one on your path.
